The route
SJO → La Fortuna (~3h) → Monteverde via jeep–boat–jeep (~3h) → Manuel Antonio / Quepos (~4h) → SJO (~3h).
Rental car?
This is the itinerary where a rental car starts to pay off, mainly for the Monteverde → coast leg. Shared shuttles still cover every leg if you would rather not drive.
Budget
Roughly $900 per person for 6 nights at our mid-range daily estimates, before flights. Three bases, 5–6 activities and two park entries. Manuel Antonio park tickets are timed and sell out in high season — book ahead.

La Fortuna / Arenal
Front-loads the trip with the volcano, waterfalls and hot springs while you are still adjusting.
- Day 1 — SJO to La Fortuna, hot springs.
- Day 2 — La Fortuna Waterfall plus Arenal 1968 trails, or swap in rafting on the Balsa.

Monteverde
Cloud forest, and the only stop where a guide reliably changes what you see.
- Day 3 — Lake crossing to Monteverde, afternoon at the hummingbird gardens or a coffee farm.
- Day 4 — Guided reserve walk at dawn, ziplines or hanging bridges after lunch.
Stop 3 · 2 nights · 4.5h drive from Monteverde
Manuel Antonio
The most reliable place in Costa Rica to see sloths, monkeys and a beach on the same morning.
- Day 5 — Drive to Manuel Antonio (~4h), afternoon on Playa Espadilla.
- Day 6 — National park at opening with a guide, then a slow afternoon; sunset from a Quepos-road viewpoint.
- Day 7 — Morning back to SJO (~3h) for an afternoon flight.

- Travellers happy to change hotels twice
- Wildlife-first trips on a standard week of holiday
What this itinerary gives up
- Three bases in seven nights means two half days lost to transfers. That is the price of variety.
- Manuel Antonio is the busiest national park in the country. Go at opening or accept crowds.
- The Caribbean side and Osa Peninsula don't fit. Both need their own trip length.

- Yes, for one half of the country. A week comfortably covers the northern volcano region, cloud forest and the central Pacific. It does not cover the Caribbean or Osa as well.

- Three, maximum. Every extra base costs roughly half a day in transit plus a hotel check-in, and four bases in seven nights leaves no full days anywhere.
