14-Day Costa Rica Itinerary: Both Coasts and Real Rainforest
Two weeks is when Costa Rica stops being a highlights reel. This routing gives Corcovado the nights it needs, adds the Caribbean's completely different culture and food, and still keeps the volcano and cloud forest.

The route
SJO → Puerto Viejo (~4h30) → La Fortuna (~6h, or via Sarapiquí to break it up) → Monteverde (~3h) → Manuel Antonio (~4h) → Drake Bay or Puerto Jiménez (drive plus boat, or a short domestic flight) → SJO by air.
Rental car?
Rent a car for the mainland legs and drop it before Osa — flying into Drake Bay or Puerto Jiménez saves the better part of two days.

Stop 1 · 3 nights
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
Afro-Caribbean food, reef snorkelling and sloths, and a pace nothing on the Pacific matches. Doing it first means you land and drive away from the crowds.
- Day 1 — SJO to Puerto Viejo (~4h30), settle in.
- Day 2 — Bike the coast road to Punta Uva and Manzanillo, snorkel if the sea is calm.
- Day 3 — Cahuita National Park guided walk, or the Jaguar Rescue Centre, then Caribbean dinner in town.
Stop 2 · 3 nights · 6h drive from Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
La Fortuna / Arenal
The long cross-country drive earns you the volcano, hot springs and the country's best activity density.
- Day 4 — Drive to La Fortuna, breaking the trip in Sarapiquí; hot springs on arrival.
- Day 5 — La Fortuna Waterfall and Arenal 1968 trails.
- Day 6 — Rafting, canyoning, or a Río Celeste day trip.

Monteverde
Cloud forest, and the trip's coolest, most different couple of days.
- Day 7 — Lake crossing, coffee farm in the afternoon.
- Day 8 — Dawn guided reserve walk, canopy activities later.
Stop 4 · 2 nights · 4.5h drive from Monteverde
Manuel Antonio
A soft landing between cloud forest and Osa, with the easiest wildlife on the Pacific coast.
- Day 9 — Drive down (~4h), afternoon beach.
- Day 10 — Park at opening with a guide, then a genuinely lazy afternoon.
Stop 5 · 3 nights
Drake Bay
The jumping-off point for Corcovado, which is the single most biodiverse place in the country and the reason to take two weeks.
- Day 11 — Travel to Drake Bay (boat from Sierpe or a short flight).
- Day 12 — Full guided day in Corcovado (San Pedrillo or Sirena station). Guides are mandatory and worth it.
- Day 13 — Caño Island snorkel or dive, or a slower rainforest walk near the lodge.
- Day 14 — Fly back to SJO for an onward flight.

- Wildlife-first trips aiming at Corcovado and the Osa Peninsula
- Anyone who found a 7-day trip too rushed
What this itinerary gives up
- Five bases means five check-ins. If that sounds exhausting, cut Monteverde or Manuel Antonio and add nights elsewhere.
- Osa is expensive and logistically fiddly — remote lodges, mandatory guides in Corcovado, limited road access.
- The Caribbean has a different rain pattern: September and October are often its driest, the reverse of the Pacific.

- No — two weeks is roughly what the country's road network wants. It is the shortest trip where Corcovado and the Caribbean both fit without stripping the rest to one night each.
- Should I visit the Caribbean or the Pacific coast in Costa Rica?
- On a two-week trip, both. On a shorter trip pick the Pacific for easy logistics and wildlife-dense parks, or the Caribbean for food, culture and quieter beaches.
