5-Day Costa Rica Itinerary: Volcano and Cloud Forest
Five days is enough for two bases if you pick two that are close together. Arenal and Monteverde are linked by the jeep–boat–jeep crossing, which turns a 4-hour drive into a scenic 3-hour transfer.

The route
SJO → La Fortuna (~3h) → Monteverde via Lake Arenal jeep–boat–jeep (~3h) → SJO (~3h30). No backtracking.
Rental car?
A car is optional. The jeep–boat–jeep crossing is designed for car-free travellers, and both towns have walkable centres with tour pickups.
Budget
Roughly $570 per person for 4 nights at our mid-range daily estimates, before flights. Two mid-range bases and 3–4 guided activities. Monteverde reserve entries and guides are the line item people forget.
Day by day

Stop 1 · 2 nights
La Fortuna / Arenal
Volcano views, waterfalls and hot springs, and the launch point for the lake crossing to Monteverde.
- Day 1 — Arrive from SJO, hot springs in the late afternoon.
- Day 2 — La Fortuna Waterfall in the morning, Arenal 1968 or the hanging bridges in the afternoon.

Stop 2 · 2 nights · 3h drive from La Fortuna / Arenal
Monteverde
Cloud forest is a genuinely different ecosystem from lowland rainforest, and this is the easiest place in the country to walk through one.
- Day 3 — Jeep–boat–jeep across Lake Arenal, arrive Santa Elena by early afternoon, easy afternoon walk or the hummingbird gardens.
- Day 4 — Early guided walk in Monteverde or Curi-Cancha reserve (guides are what turn a green tunnel into wildlife), ziplines or hanging bridges after lunch.
- Day 5 — Drive or shuttle back to SJO for an afternoon or evening flight.
Best for
- First trips where nature matters more than beach time
- Travellers who want two distinct ecosystems without long drives
- Couples and families comfortable with one relocation mid-trip
What this itinerary gives up
- Still no coast. Adding a beach here means cutting one base to a single night, which is not worth it.
- Monteverde is cool and often wet. Pack a layer even in dry season — people routinely underpack for it.
- The jeep–boat–jeep crossing runs on a fixed schedule, so your transfer day loses a morning or an afternoon.

Common questions
- Is the jeep-boat-jeep worth it between Arenal and Monteverde?
- Yes. Driving around Lake Arenal takes about 4 hours on winding roads; the crossing takes about 3 and includes a lake boat ride, and it removes the worst of the driving.
- Can I add a beach to a 5-day Costa Rica trip?
- You can, but something has to give. Swapping Monteverde for a Pacific beach town keeps the trip at two bases; trying to fit volcano, cloud forest and coast into five days means three transfer days out of five.
