SJO → La Fortuna is roughly 3 hours by car or shared shuttle. Sleep all three nights in the same bed and you buy back a full day of sightseeing.

La Fortuna / Arenal
The highest concentration of things to do anywhere in Costa Rica, and close enough to SJO that a short trip still works.
- Day 1 — Land at SJO, shuttle to La Fortuna, and spend the late afternoon at a hot-spring complex or the free riverside pools. Easy dinner in town.
- Day 2 — Morning at La Fortuna Waterfall or the Arenal hanging bridges, afternoon on the Arenal 1968 lava-flow trails for the classic volcano view. Guided night walk if you still have energy.
- Day 3 — One last early activity (safari float on the Peñas Blancas river is the gentlest option), then shuttle back to SJO for an evening flight.

- First-timers who would rather see one region properly than three badly
- Travellers flying into San José (SJO)
What this itinerary gives up
- You will not see both coasts. Anyone promising you Caribbean and Pacific in three days is selling you transfer days.
- No beach time worth the drive. La Fortuna is inland; the nearest good Pacific beach is a 3–4 hour drive each way.
- Arrival and departure days are half days. Budget them as such.

- It is enough for one region, not for the country. Three days built around a single base gives you a genuinely good trip; three days split across two or three destinations mostly gives you time in a van.

- La Fortuna if you want volcano, waterfalls and hot springs; Manuel Antonio if a beach and near-guaranteed monkeys and sloths matter more. Both are about 3 hours from SJO.
