Ten days lets you keep the classic north loop and add the south Pacific, where whales, real rainforest and far fewer people start about two hours past Manuel Antonio.

The route
SJO → La Fortuna (~3h) → Monteverde (~3h) → Manuel Antonio (~4h) → Uvita (~1h30) → SJO (~4h). One long final drive, or fly Palmar Sur/Quepos back.
Rental car?
Rent a car. South of Quepos the useful beaches, waterfalls and viewpoints are spread out and shuttle schedules get thin.
Budget
Roughly $1,325 per person for 9 nights at our mid-range daily estimates, before flights. Four bases over nine nights. The south Pacific is cheaper for food and lodging than Manuel Antonio, which offsets the extra fuel.

With ten days you can take a third night here and add rafting or Río Celeste as a day trip.
- Day 1 — Arrive, hot springs.

- Day 3 — Long day trip to Río Celeste, or rafting on the Balsa or Sarapiquí.

Monteverde
Two nights is the right length — one full day for a guided reserve walk, one for canopy activities.
- Day 4 — Lake crossing, coffee or chocolate tour in the afternoon.

Manuel Antonio
Easy wildlife and a beach day to reset before the quieter south.
- Day 6 — Drive down, afternoon beach.
- Day 7 — National park at opening with a guide, slow afternoon.

Uvita
Marino Ballena's whale tail sandbar, waterfalls, and the first place on this route that feels genuinely uncrowded.
- Day 8 — Short drive to Uvita, walk the whale-tail sandbar at low tide.
- Day 9 — Whale-watching boat trip in season, or Nauyaca Waterfalls from Dominical.
- Day 10 — Early start back to SJO (~4h) for an afternoon flight.
Best for
- Second trips, or ambitious first trips with real time off
- Whale watching (July–October and December–March in Marino Ballena)
- Travellers who want fewer crowds without going full expedition
What this itinerary gives up
- The southern legs are long. Manuel Antonio to Uvita is short, but Uvita back to SJO is a 4-hour day.
- Uvita and Dominical are quiet by design. If you want nightlife, this is the wrong extension.
- Still not Osa. Corcovado deserves its own 3–4 nights, which is the 14-day itinerary.

- Do I need a car for a 10-day Costa Rica itinerary?
- For this routing, yes — south of Quepos the sights are spread out and shuttles run less often. North of there you could do it car-free.
- When can you see whales in Uvita?
- Humpbacks pass Marino Ballena in two seasons: roughly July to October (southern population, the bigger show) and December to March. Sightings are never guaranteed.
