La Fortuna / Arenal
Northern Lowlands · Pura Vida Index 6.9/10 · $$$
Costa Rica's adventure capital sits at the foot of a near-perfect volcanic cone. Hot springs, waterfalls, hanging bridges and rafting are all within a 40-minute drive, which is why almost every first-time itinerary starts here.
- Ideal stay
- 3–4 nights
- Best months
- December–April is driest. May, June and November are green, lush and much quieter.
- Mid-range day
- $155 per person
- Car needed?
- Optional. Shuttles and tour pickups cover almost everything, so plenty of visitors skip the car here. A car pays off if you want Río Celeste, El Castillo and quieter swimming holes on your own schedule.

Monteverde
Cordillera de Tilarán · Pura Vida Index 7/10 · $$
A misty mountain town wrapped in cloud forest, founded in part by Quaker settlers and now one of the most biologically studied places in the tropics. Cool, green, and unlike anywhere else in the country.
- Ideal stay
- 2–3 nights
- Best months
- Quetzal season runs roughly February–July. December–April has the least rain; September–October is quietest.
- Mid-range day
- $130 per person
- Car needed?
- Not required. Shuttles connect Monteverde with La Fortuna, San José and the Pacific coast, and most tours include pickup. If you do drive, higher clearance is welcome on the final approach.

Choose La Fortuna / Arenal if…
You want the most to do in one place — waterfalls, rafting, hanging bridges, hot springs — plus a volcano view from breakfast, and a warm lowland climate.
Choose Monteverde if…
You care most about walking through cloud forest with a guide, want cooler weather, and are happy with fewer activities and a quieter town.
Can you do both?
They are three hours apart via the jeep–boat–jeep lake crossing, so on any trip of five days or more the real answer is both, in that order. Direct driving time between them is roughly 3 hours.
